How to Wait on God During a Quiet Season

Learning how to wait on God is one of the hardest parts of the Christian life. We’ve all prayed for direction, breakthrough, healing, financial provision, or what seemed like the perfect opportunity, only to be met with silence.

When our prayers appear unanswered, it’s easy to wonder if God has forgotten us. But these quiet seasons often become the very place where God teaches us to trust His timing, strengthen our faith, and wait on Him without losing hope.

Staying in faith and believing that your due time will come is not always easy.  But I can assure you it’s worth the wait.

You’re not doing anything wrong.  God is not mad at you, nor is there an exact formula to avoid quiet seasons.

But there are strategies to help us keep fighting the good fight of faith.

What Does It Mean to Wait on God?

The most critical factor in waiting on God is trust.

You have to trust and believe that God loves you, heard you, and He too wants the best for you.  Any wavering in those three will instantly have you wrestling with doubt.

You have to trust His timing.  And, trust yourself.  Yes, yourself.

Let me show you what that looks like as a sourdough microbaker.

In my scope of work trusting that my starter is strong, well fed, and reliable is literally the entire existence of my business.

Since packet yeast is not used in sourdough, trust in the reliability of my sourdough starter is all I have to depend on.

And because I know my sourdough starter is strong, healthy, and reliable I have full confidence that I will get my desired consistent bread results.

But, that’s not an instant process.

The sourdough starter has to be “fed”, which means adding flour and water to the leftover starter.  Then, the newly fed starter usually takes between 4-12 hours to become bubbly and active — ready for baking.

Every time I feed my sourdough starter, I don’t stand over the jar wondering if it will rise.

I’ve watched it faithfully do what it was created to do hundreds of times before. Even though I can’t see immediate results, I trust the process because I know its history.

Waiting on God has taught me something similar.

I may not immediately see Him working, but I can trust His character because of His faithfulness throughout Scripture and throughout my own life.

His past faithfulness gives me confidence while I wait for His future provision.

Why Does God Make Us Wait on Him?

First and foremost, waiting is not a punishment.

Oftentimes, waiting prepares us more than it delays us.

Waiting gives us time to develop character, grow, mature and listen for present tense instructions.

I experienced a season of waiting as I sought God for creative ways to contribute financially to our home.

Looking back, I can see that God was doing far more than preparing an opportunity, He was preparing me.

During that season, He strengthened my faith, refined my character, and taught me to trust His timing.

When He finally answered my prayer for extra income through my sourdough business, I realized His timing had been perfect all along.

I’ve found that waiting on God has a way of humbling us.

It gently softens our hearts, reminds us that we are not in control and teaches us to depend on Him instead of ourselves.

It’s in the waiting, where pride begins to fade, humility grows, and our trust in God’s timing becomes stronger than our desire to rush ahead.

Myself or no one can say exactly why God allows us to wait even when we prefer not to in some instances.

But, a wise course of action is to use the waiting period to put our ears and hearts toward the Lord so we can grow in sync with Him and learn the necessary lessons in the meantime.

Other reasons why we may be in a waiting season is because God is protecting us, or we’re simply waiting on His timing.

Either way, God’s waiting is never wasted.

How to Wait on God Without Losing Joy

A good place to start for maintaining joy while waiting on God is Galatians 6:9

“Let us not grow weary or become discouraged in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap, if we do not give in.”

During a quiet season of waiting on God, it is easy to succumb to frustration, doubt, fear, and negativity. However, we can sustain our joy and conquer these temptations because we have the promise of a proper time in God’s word.

To keep this promise in mind and get ready for that proper time, we may need to integrate intentional reminders into our daily routines.

7 Practical Ways to Wait on God Without Growing Weary

1. Stay Faithful in Today’s Small Assignments You Have Today

God often prepares us for tomorrow through ordinary obedience today.

Joy grows when we stop waiting for one day and begin serving Him today.

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” — Luke 16:10

2. Stop Comparing Your Current Season to Someone Else’s

Comparison makes waiting feel longer.

While another mom may seem to be launching a business, writing a book, or living her dream, remember that God writes every story differently.

3. Keep Listening Even When God Seems Quiet

Just because God is quiet doesn’t mean He is absent.

Think of sourdough bread. During the rising process, everything looks still, but inside the dough, countless changes are taking place.

The silence may actually be preparation.

4. Celebrate God’s Faithfulness – Even if it seems small

Waiting becomes discouraging when we only focus on the big answer we’re hoping for.

Instead, begin noticing God’s daily blessings:

  • A peaceful morning.
  • A child who gives an unexpected hug.
  • A financial provision.
  • A prayer answered in a small way.

It all matters!

Joy grows wherever gratitude is practiced.

5. Let Go of the Need to Control the Outcome

One of the hardest lessons in waiting is surrender.

We often want God’s promise, but we also want to control how and when it arrives.

Real peace comes when we can honestly pray,

“Lord, I trust Your timing more than my own.”

Waiting becomes lighter when we’re no longer carrying responsibilities that belong to God.

6. Invest in the Woman God Is Making You Become

Sometimes we’re so focused on what we’re waiting for that we forget God is shaping who we’re becoming.

Use this season to grow.

  • Learn a new skill.
  • Read books that strengthen your faith.
  • Develop healthy habits.
  • Build your home with intention.

God is more interested in preparing the person than just delivering the promise.

7. Remember That Every Harvest Has a Hidden Season

No farmer plants seeds expecting fruit the next morning.

There is watering, waiting, root growth, then eventually a harvest.

The same is true in our spiritual lives.

You may not see visible progress today, but God is growing roots that will support the harvest He has promised.

The same God who appointed the harvest also appointed the timing.

And because His timing is perfect, you can wait with hope, joy, and confidence, knowing that He is working even when He seems quiet.

Don’t mistake God’s silence for His absence.

Seeds grow underground long before anyone sees the harvest.

Sourdough rises long before it’s ready for the oven.

And hearts are often transformed long before circumstances change.

Let these Scriptures about waiting on God renew your hope and strengthen your trust in Him!

  • Isaiah 40:31 – “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
  • Psalm 27:14 – “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord
  • Lamentations 3:24–25 – I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him. The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him.”
