What started as baking bread in my kitchen slowly became much more than a hobby. Through the process of making sourdough bread, God began teaching me lessons about patience, preparation, faithfulness, and purpose. He was using the ordinary work happening inside my home to prepare me for a purpose I couldn’t yet see. And I believe that you too, can find your purpose as a stay-at-home mom.

I want to encourage you that your purpose may be closer than you think. God may already be using this season your in now, your gifts, and even the ordinary things in your hands to lead you toward what He has prepared for you.
1 Thessalonians 4: 11-12
“and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.”
How to Find Your Purpose as a Stay-at-Home Mom by Starting With What You Have

Sometimes finding your purpose begins right where you are and looking at what is already in your hands and trusting the process with prayer especially if you are looking for ways to generate extra income for your family.
Especially if your family is living on one income and money is already tight, it can be difficult to spend extra money on supplies, materials, or other expenses to start a business or pursue an idea you’re not yet sure will succeed. You may want to try something new, but the thought of spending money on something that may not work can make taking that first step feel risky.
Start slow, with a simple concept that you can commit to first before making huge investments.
I spent a lot of time praying for extra income and wondering what God might have for me beyond the walls of my home. I did not have some big idea or a business plan. During my time of waiting there was this small interest slowly brewing, it was a genuine love for baking bread.
Sourdough started as something simple. I was learning how to work with flour, water, and a starter. I was feeding it, watching it, learning from my mistakes, and making bread for my family. Baking for family led to baking for business, which led to sharing my faith through writing.
No matter how big or small. Simple or extravagant, pay attention to the things you naturally find yourself wanting to do or taking a deep interest in.
You may only be able to see what is in front of you right now. That’s okay. Let God unfold the bigger picture in His timing.
Preparation Comes Before the Opportunity
I understand the feeling of not wanting to pursue something that would take you away from your family. I also wanted to find a way to use what God had placed in me right where I was.
Before sourdough became a business for me, I spent hours simply learning. I practiced, made mistakes, learned how the dough worked, and became more confident with each loaf. At the time, it just felt like I was baking bread.
But here’s the truth that often goes unnoticed. Preparation is the purpose too.
Philippians 4:9
“Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.”
Sometimes the season you’re in may feel like you’re not doing enough because nothing significant seems to be happening. But God often uses the quiet seasons to develop the skills, character, and wisdom you’ll need for what comes next.
You don’t have to leave your family behind to discover what God has placed inside of you. Oftentimes, many family friendly businesses can be done from your home full time or part time. You can also create a business on your terms to give you flexibility or a creative schedule to help you prioritize your family and homemaking.
During your season of preparation this is the time to take inventory regarding what in your family life is priority.
So that, when opportunities come your way you’re prepared to say yes or no according to your values. You will be more grounded and confident as to what direction you want to build and at what pace.
Don’t Be Afraid to Start Small When Pursuing Your God-Given Purpose

Sometimes pursuing your God-given purpose can feel like it needs to begin with something big. We may think we need a perfect plan, more money, more time, or even a completely different season of life before we can even begin.
But what if God is asking you to start small?
Zechariah 4:10
“For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth.”
One loaf became a few loaves. A few loaves became sharing with others. Eventually, that grew into a sourdough micro-bakery from home.
Because I was willing to start with what I had.
But keep in mind, starting small doesn’t mean your purpose is small..
So don’t despise the small beginnings. Pray about it. Prepare for it. And take the next step in faith.
You may be surprised by what God can do with something that may not appear significant.
And while you’re in the beginning stages, it’s also important to remember to enjoy the growth with God. Stay close to Him. Seek Him for guidance. Lean into His word to support you when you face hard days. Sincerely allow God to be a part of the building phase
Don’t become so focused on where you’re going that you miss what God is doing in you along the way. The beginning stages are not just about building something, they are also about allowing God to build you.
Your Purpose May be Closer Than You Think

Sometimes we look so far ahead that we overlook the possibilities right in front of us.
We wonder what our purpose could be while standing in the middle of a season that seems ordinary, but this is where “the making begins”.
I never could have looked at a single loaf of sourdough bread sitting on my kitchen counter and known everything God would eventually do through it.
I only saw what was right in front of me.
But as I continued moving forward, I began to recognize that the things I was learning and experiencing were becoming part of a much bigger story. A greater purpose.
Even as a stay-at-home mom, you may not discover your purpose by sitting still and waiting for a perfect answer. You may discover it while you’re living your life.
Maybe the thing you thought was “just a hobby” will become something more.
Maybe a skill you’ve developed over the years will open a door.
Or, an experience you’ve walked through will give you something meaningful to offer someone else.
There are also some situations where God will use those things simply to shape who you are.
Not everything has to become a business.
Not every gift needs to produce an income.
And your worth isn’t determined by how much you accomplish.
Your purpose is bigger than productivity.
Your purpose is God’s reason why you’re here and the impact He created you for. Whether that’s impact in your home, your neighborhood or nationwide.
You don’t need to prove to others that your purpose is important. You just need to know what it is so you can fulfill it.
Your life at home is not even on pause while you discover your purpose. You are already living the story God has written about you.
