Why We Don’t Use Pre-Shredded Cheese in Our Recipes

Shredding a block of cheese can feel like one more unnecessary step.  But when it comes to the way we bake, those little details matter.

At Home Cooking Is Better, we believe fresh ingredients can make a noticeable difference. That’s why we choose to shred our own cheese rather than use pre-shredded cheese in our recipes.

What Is Added to Pre-Shredded Cheese?

One of the biggest differences between a block of cheese and pre-shredded cheese is what happens after the cheese is shredded.

When cheese is shredded and packaged, the individual pieces can stick together. To help prevent this, manufacturers commonly add an anti-caking agents to shredded cheese. Depending on the product, this can include ingredients such as cellulose, starches, or other food-grade anti-caking agents.

These ingredients serve a practical purpose. They help keep the cheese from clumping together in the package and make it easier to pour and use.

But for our sourdough bread loaves made with cheese, we prefer to start with a simple block of cheese and shred it ourselves. This allows us to choose the cheese we want and know exactly what we are adding to our recipes.

Freshly Shredded Cheese Takes One Extra Step

Shredding our cheese isn’t always the most exciting part of our baking process.

But sometimes the best things in our kitchens come from being willing to take one extra step.

And that’s really the heart behind our decision. Baking good bread that we are proud to serve our families.

Our Simple Rule for Cheese

When you order a loaf of bread from us including cheese as one of the add-ins, we want you to know we are starting with a block of cheese and shredding it ourselves.

We do not use pre-shredded/pre-packaged cheese with anti-caking agents.

It’s part of what we mean when we say home cooking is better!

Enjoy.
