Homemade Pizza and Dough (sourdough)

Homemade pizza and dough (sourdough) can become a weekly staple with almost limitless healthy toppings to choose from.

When I tell the kids we’re having a pizza night, they’re almost just as excited as if we were buying take-out pizza!

Homemade pizza can still be delicious even when loaded with fresh vegetables!

Combining different cheese variations, seasoned homemade pizza sauce, and freshly ground beef crumble makes this pizza perfect for any weekday or weekend night.

I know pizza is not often thought of as a complete meal, but if made correctly you can create a complete meal all on top of a delicious homemade dough!

This sourdough pizza dough is also great to make ahead in batches and freeze for later use.

Homemade Pizza and Dough (sourdough)

Today we’ll dive into the art of artisan homemade pizza and dough making.

From topping selection to flour and grains, let’s see just how easy it is to make your own tried and true homemade pizza you and your family will crave.

Make the Sourdough Homemade Pizza Dough

The key to a phenomenal homemade pizza lies in its foundation: the dough.

While store-bought dough is convenient, making your own allows for customization and superior flavor.

Ingredients for the pizza dough:

  • 1/2 cup sourdough starter
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups fresh milled whole grain flour (in this recipe I used Einkorn)
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tbsp. King Arthur’s pizza seasoning (The ingredients listed are onion, garlic, basil, oregano, red pepper flakes, and salt.)

Of course, you can use the classic pepperoni, sausage, and cheese.

Steps for Making Sourdough Pizza

Begin with basic ingredients: flour, water, sourdough, salt, King Arthur pizza seasoning and olive oil.

Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl.

Pour the dough mixture in a stand mixer and mix until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Shape the pizza dough into a ball, place in a greased bowl cover, and allow to rise for 8 hours.

After 8 hours, remove the pizza dough from the bowl and divide it in half.

Now that your pizza dough is ready, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Prepare the dough before rolling it out. Sprinkle flour on top of the dough then use a rolling pin to flatten the dough.

You can also gently stretch the dough using your hands into your desired shape. Traditional round pizzas are classic but feel free to get creative with rectangular or oval shapes. Remember, imperfection adds character to homemade pizza, so don’t worry about achieving a flawless circle.

This step is optional but a nice addition to add to your pizza. Fold over the edge of the dough to create a crust for the pizza.

Spread homemade pizza sauce, cheese, and toppings.

Place your assembled pizza in the preheated oven and bake for at least 30 minutes.

Once complete, remove from oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes before cutting with a pizza cutter.
